The 64 gates
Every gate in your Human Design chart.
The 64 gates are the smallest pieces of a Human Design chart: each one a specific flavor of energy, drawn from a hexagram of the I Ching and living in one of the nine centers. Below they’re grouped by the center they belong to. Every entry is written in plain English, in our own words.

9 gatesCommon questions about gates
How many gates do I have?
Usually about twenty. A chart has 26 activations, 13 in the black Personality column and 13 in the red Design column, but some of them land in the same gate, so the number of different gates is smaller. In our sample of 20,000 random birth moments between 1950 and 2010, the average was 19.6 different gates, and 92% of charts had between 17 and 22.
What is a hanging gate?
A hanging gate is an active gate that isn't part of any complete channel in your chart: none of its partner gates is active. It doesn't define a center, but it's still part of you, a theme you carry that often comes alive around people who have the other half. That pairing is what's called an electromagnetic connection.
Most gates are hanging gates. In our sample, the average chart had 12.9 active gates that weren't part of any defined channel, out of about 20 in total.
How do I find my gates?
Calculate your chart and look at the two columns of planets next to the bodygraph. Every entry is written as gate.line, so 34.1 means gate 34, line 1. The black column (Personality) is calculated for your birth moment and the red column (Design) for about three months earlier. Every gate that appears in either column is one of yours.
Our free chart lists all 26 activations, and the chart-reading guide has a worked example.
What do the lines of a gate mean?
Each gate is divided into six lines, and the line tells you which flavor of the gate's theme is active. In Human Design the six lines carry the same basic character wherever they appear: the first is about foundation and study, the second natural talent that wants its privacy, the third learning by trial and error, the fourth relationships and network, the fifth being projected onto by others, and the sixth the long view of the role model. They're the same six lines that make up the profiles.
Line-level detail is an advanced layer, so it's worth getting to know your type, authority and profile first.
What gate is the Sun in today?
It changes every few days. The Sun moves through all 64 gates in a year, spending about 5.7 days in each, so the gate it's in right now is a passing theme rather than anything permanent. The order it follows around the wheel isn't the numerical order of the gates.
To see it yourself, enter today's date and the current time in our free chart as if it were a birth. The Sun row in the black Personality column shows the gate the Sun is in right now.
