The 12 profiles

How you engage life and learning.

Your profile is two numbers, for example 1/3 or 5/2. The first comes from your Personality (conscious) Sun, the second from your Design (unconscious) Sun. Each number is a “line,” and the pair describes how you learn and how others tend to meet you.

Common questions ↓

The six lines

Every profile is built from two of these six archetypes.

Line 1 Investigator

needs a secure foundation; studies, researches, builds to bedrock. Insecurity until the ground is solid.

Line 2 Hermit

natural at withdrawing to develop, then called out to share. Projected; alternates retreat and emergence.

Line 3 Martyr

learns by trial and error; bonds and breaks bonds through direct experience. Resilient, experimental.

Line 4 Opportunist

relies on network and friendships; influence and opportunity move through relationships. Foundation line.

Line 5 Heretic

projected onto by others (people see a savior); brings practical, generalizable solutions. Reputation-sensitive.

Line 6 Role Model

lives in three phases (trial-and-error to ~30, withdrawal/observation to ~50, then living as a role model). Aims to embody.

Common questions about profiles

How many profiles are there?

Twelve. Each profile is two of the six lines. The first number is the line of your Personality Sun (the black side of the chart, calculated for the moment of birth) and the second is the line of your Design Sun (the red side, calculated for about three months earlier). Because the two Suns always sit a fixed distance apart, only twelve of the 36 possible pairs ever occur.

What is the rarest profile?

There isn't a single rarest one. Six profiles are rare, and they're rare in almost exactly the same measure: 1/4, 2/5, 3/6, 4/1, 5/2 and 6/3 each turn up in about 2.2% of charts. The other six, 1/3, 2/4, 3/5, 4/6, 5/1 and 6/2, each turn up in about 14.4%.

The reason is geometry. The Design side is calculated for the moment the Sun stood exactly 88 degrees earlier in its path, and each line covers 0.9375 degrees, so the gap is always 93.87 lines. That fixed gap puts the Design Sun's line in one position relative to the Personality Sun's line 86.7% of the time, which gives the six common profiles, and one line further along the other 13.3% of the time, which gives the six rare ones.

Our sample of 20,000 random birth moments between 1950 and 2010 agrees: the common six came out between 14.0% and 14.9%, the rare six between 2.0% and 2.4%, with 4/1 at 2.4%. You'll often read that 4/1 is the rarest profile. By the numbers it's one of six equally rare profiles, and the only one with a Juxtaposition cross, which may be why it gets singled out.

What do the two numbers of a profile mean?

The first number is the conscious line, from the black Personality side: the part of the profile you tend to recognize in yourself. The second is the unconscious line, from the red Design side: the part that runs more in the background and that other people often notice before you do. Together they describe how you learn and how people tend to meet you.

The six lines themselves are described on this page, and each profile page covers how its two lines interact.

Can my profile change with a different birth time?

The profile comes only from the two Suns. Each Sun spends about a day in each line, so a wrong birth time only matters when one of them sits near the edge of a line, but with two Suns in play that happens more often than people expect. In our tests, moving a birth time by one hour changed the profile in 10.1% of charts, and by two hours in 18.0% (details).

If you don't know your time, treat your profile as likely rather than certain, and if our calculator flags a Sun on a boundary, read both candidate profiles.

Does my profile depend on my type?

No. Any profile can come with any type, which is why you'll see combinations like a 3/5 Manifesting Generator or a 2/4 Projector. Type describes how your energy works, authority how you decide, and profile how you learn and how people tend to meet you. The three are read together, but none of them decides the others.
