Inner authorities

How you make reliable decisions.

Your inner authority is where your dependable “yes” and “no” actually live, almost never in the mind. It’s determined by which centers are defined in your chart, following a clear hierarchy. Everyone has one of these seven.

Common questions about authority

How many authorities are there in Human Design?

Seven. In the order a chart checks them: Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental / Environment and Lunar. Everyone has exactly one of them.

The order matters because a chart can have several of the relevant centers defined at once. Your authority is the first one on the list your chart qualifies for, which is why a defined Solar Plexus overrides everything below it.

How do I find my authority?

Calculate your chart, then read down this list and stop at the first line that's true for you:

  • Solar Plexus defined: Emotional
  • Sacral defined: Sacral
  • Spleen defined: Splenic
  • Heart defined and connected to the Throat or the G: Ego
  • G connected to the Throat: Self-Projected
  • Only the Head, Ajna or Throat defined: Mental / Environment
  • No centers defined: Lunar

Our free chart shows your authority directly, and the chart-reading guide walks through an example.

What is the most common authority?

Emotional, by a wide margin. We ran 20,000 random birth moments between 1950 and 2010 through our own calculator, and this is how the seven authorities came out:

  • Emotional: 52.4%
  • Sacral: 32.5%
  • Splenic: 8.8%
  • Self-Projected: 2.6%
  • Mental / Environment: 1.8%
  • Ego: 1.1%
  • Lunar: 0.9%

Commonly cited figures put Emotional Authority at about half of all people, which matches. The same shares appear as "How common" on each authority page.

Emotional or Sacral: which authority is mine?

If your Solar Plexus is defined, it's Emotional, even when your Sacral is defined too. The Solar Plexus sits higher in the hierarchy, so its wave sets the timing of your decisions. The gut response still shows up; it just gets checked over time instead of acted on at once.

This combination is common. In our sample, 48.7% of Generators and 59.0% of Manifesting Generators had Emotional Authority. If you're a Sacral type with a colored Solar Plexus, the practical rule is to notice the gut response, then sleep on it.

What does "no inner authority" mean?

It's a phrase often used for the two authorities that don't come from any center below the Throat: Mental / Environment, for Projectors with only the Head, Ajna or Throat defined, and Lunar, for Reflectors. It doesn't mean there's no reliable way to decide. It means clarity comes from outside the body: from the right places, from talking things through with trusted people and, for Reflectors, from time.

Together these two account for about 2.7% of charts in our sample (1.8% and 0.9%).

Can your authority change?

No. It's calculated from your birth data, so it stays the same for life. What changes is how well you know it: most people spend a while testing their authority against real decisions before they trust it.

The practical caveat is birth time. In our tests, moving a birth time by one hour changed the authority in 1.5% of charts, and by two hours in 3.8% (details). If your time is a guess and a placement sits near a boundary, our calculator flags it.
